Ricketts Glen offers the emphatic version: water over stone, a trail that asks for proper footwear, and a campground that is not taking guests while the Falls Trail remains open for the day. In Vermont, a lodge is being mended rather than abandoned; in Maine, the sea is keeping its own appointment with the calendar.

PA · Ricketts Glen Falls Trail — day-use OPEN (campground CLOSED)

The short version: Campground closed for reno starting Sep 8, 2026 — Falls Trail day-use stays open for mid–late Sep waterfall hiking.

DCNR is replacing campground shower/restroom buildings at Ricketts Glen (and Lackawanna) with a full campground closure Tue Sep 8, 2026 through early 2028. Prospective visitors cannot book campsites there. Day-use areas remain open.

VT · Taft Lodge CLOSED — Mansfield overnight Plan B

The short version: Taft Lodge on Mount Mansfield closed Sep 8 → end of October — no tenting or hammocking above 2,500 ft in that zone.

Green Mountain Club technicians are replacing rotting sill logs on the 105-year-old lodge — oldest, largest, and second-highest overnight site on the Long Trail. Alert posted Sep 2, 2026.

The Green Mountain Club’s alternate overnight sites (first-come, first-served; may fill in busy fall):

• Butler Lodge — 3.5 mi south (no overflow tenting/hammocking)
• Twin Brooks Tenting Area — 4.7 mi south (adequate overflow tenting)
• Sterling Pond Shelter — 5.9 mi north (ample overflow tenting)

Day hiking Mansfield / Long Trail approaches is not closed by this alert — overnight capacity is limited — reservation required.
