When the lots fill: Franconia Notch this weekend

The notch does not wait for you to finish your coffee. Early October in Franconia is the week the Whites usually tip into color, and the parking lots tip into full. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to book Flume before you leave the driveway, pack a shell for mist on the boardwalks, and keep Crawford Notch as the graceful second arrangement.

This is not an expedition. It is a foliage weekend with agency-clear hours, one timed attraction, and a Plan B thirty minutes east when the first lot has already made other plans.

Headline: Early-peak foliage window in the northern Whites. Start at Artist’s Bluff / Bald Mountain (~1.2–1.5 mi loop), midday at The Basin, then Flume Gorge on a timed reservation. Cannon Aerial Tramway is closed for replacement — do not plan on it.

The particulars

Artist’s Bluff / Bald Mountain: short, moderate loop with a view worth the early alarm. Park in the free dirt lot across Rt 18 from the Cannon Peabody base — not the Echo Lake Beach lot (that is for beach day-use).
The Basin: easy, paved, marked I-93 exits both directions. Good for legs that need a reset between Bluff and Flume.
Flume Gorge: ~2 mi one-way loop · stairs and boardwalks · allow ~1.5 hr. Hours Sep 8–Oct 12: 9am–5pm (covers this weekend). Timed entry required; book ahead at the NH State Parks / Flume reservation flow. Adults typically $18 online / $21 window; youth rates apply; pets out. Mist is normal — a light shell earns its keep.
Shuttle: weekend trailhead shuttle historically $5 round-trip when Lafayette lots fill (confirm current dates; often runs into mid-October). If lots are slammed, take the shuttle or leave — do not invent roadside parking.
Drive context: Boston ~2.5–3.5 hr via I-93 · Portland ME similar · NYC / N. NJ is a worth-the-drive overnight · Exits 34A (Flume), 34B (Cannon / Artist’s Bluff), 34C (Echo Lake).

Hunting season courtesy

Fall hunting seasons are underway in New Hampshire. Stick to established trails, prefer midday light, and wear blaze orange (hat or vest). Put orange on the dog too. See NH Fish & Game “Share the Forest” guidance and the current hunting digest before you go.

Plan B · Crawford Notch / Mt. Willard

About 30–40 minutes east if Flume is sold out, Lafayette lots are cooked, or weather turns. Mt. Willard is a classic Crawford Notch view hike with parking near the Crawford Depot / Highland Center area — do not use guest-only AMC lots. Confirm Crawford Notch State Park and WMNF day-use / pass notes day-of.

Sat AM: Artist’s Bluff / Bald Mountain — arrive early.
Sat midday: The Basin.
Sat PM: Flume Gorge on your timed window.
Sun: Lonesome Lake from Lafayette Place, Mt. Pemigewasset from the Flume area, or pivot to Crawford / Mt. Willard.
