- Description: A paved one-mile garden loop, a longer creekside alternative, and a picnic plan for the Saturday you nearly gave away.

The morning has already escaped. There was a small errand. Then another. Someone needed something from the other shop. By lunchtime, an entire Saturday has begun to look suspiciously like Tuesday.

This is the outing for that particular predicament.

A garden loop at Ridley Creek. Lunch in the bag. Enough walking to mark the day as your own, with no summit to negotiate and no ambitious schedule to disappoint.

## Choose your Saturday before you park

**The small version:** DCNR lists the Mansion Gardens Trail as a paved, one-mile loop, rated easiest, reached near the mansion parking lot. It circles the historic gardens and mansion area. Benches and a modern restroom are listed among its amenities. Check current facility access before relying on them.

**The longer version:** Sycamore Mills Road Trail is a separate 4.3-mile paved loop through woods, fields, and the creek corridor. It is shared with bicycles. Choose it if your group wants more walking; do not mistake it for an extra few minutes tacked onto the garden loop.

## A plan with room in it

For the short outing, reserve about two hours for parking, a leisurely loop, and lunch. That is our suggested allowance, not an official walking time. The pleasure is in having time left over.

Before setting out, decide which parking area you are using and save it on the map. Agree on the short route while everyone is still cheerful. A small, clear plan is easier to enjoy than a long negotiation at each junction.

If you are bringing children, give the walk one modest purpose: find three different leaf shapes, choose the best-looking tree, or pick the place you would put a garden bench. Leave the leaves where they are. The object is to notice something, not to complete a worksheet.

## The lunch that makes it an occasion

Bring a favourite sandwich, whole fruit, water, and something small to share. Use a designated picnic area shown on the map; keep the garden paths clear. A cloth napkin is optional. Remembering the food is rather less so.

The mansion makes a handsome backdrop. This plan is for the grounds and trails; it does not promise entry to the building or access through a private event.

## Before you leave the house

Check the park’s notices and the forecast, then choose the route that fits your group and the daylight. Paved does not mean slip-proof: wet leaves deserve attention. If the weather is poor, keep the lunch and move the walk to another day.
